Aimed at junior medical and nursing staff, we usually run the workshop with a single instructor for four students but it can be scaled up as necessary. The workshop begins with a short PowerPoint explanation [Introduction] followed by a set of skill stations with video demonstrations for each task. In conclusion, a series of four scenarios are run to consolidate the learning or test participants for credentialing purposes.
We use the head and thorax type manikin but a full patient manikin [compatible with intubation] can also be used. For needle cricothyroidotomy a separate DIY task trainer is used. Instructions for making it are here.
Where available video laryngoscopes can be incorporated into the training. Emergency surgical airway training is not covered as it is regarded as a more advanced skill.
